Curator | Merih Akoğul

Merih Akoğul was born in Istanbul in 1963. He graduated from the Photography Department of the Mimar Sinan University Faculty of Fine Arts in 1985 and completed a Masters Degree at the Photography Department of the Marmara University Fine Arts Institute in 2001. It was during his time at Mimar Sinan University that he founded the “Group 9” league of photographers. He has held numerous slide shows and presented his work in photography exhibitions both locally and overseas, notably in Austria, Bulgaria, South Africa, the UK, France, Greece Japan, USA, Belgium, Kosovo and Germany.

He has written and lectured extensively on the art and theory of photography, spoken at seminars and conferences, presented academic papers, directed and participated in panel discussions and sat on selection committees. In the course of his career, Akoğul has also worked for the advertising sector as a publicity photographer and copywriter. He has taught at private colleges and institutes and served as the artistic consultant for arts and culture programmes on private radio and television. His photographs, writings and critiques on the theory of photography, plastic arts and music have been published widely in the daily press and periodicals.

In 2003, Akoğul received a grant from the Art Department of the Austrian Federal Chancellery and relocated for the summer of that year to continue his photographic work in Vienna. Works by Merih Akoğul have been acquired for museum and private collections in Turkey and in other countries. Photographer Akoğul, who is currently teaching classes at Bahçeşehir University and Eyüboğlu Schools.
